Unit I – Music of the 20th to 21st Century (1900-Present)

Lesson 1 – The Music of Today: The Music Industry; in the Community and Media
*The unit is about:  The changes/evolution of music from 1900 until the present time.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

19th century and early 20th century – live music is popular (Concert halls,opera houses,clubs,some radio stations)
1877 – PHONOGRAPH was invented by Thomas Edison (motion picture camera,light bulb)


MUSIC AND THE COMMUNITY

*Music today is appreciated by everyone
*Music brings community together
*Music enriches the lives of every individual
Community adapts classical composition – Triumphal March, Ode to Joy, Joyful Joyful


MUSIC AND MEDIA

Popular or Pop Music
– contemporary(modern) musical style, intended for mass consumption and propagated by  media.
- simple melodies and suitable words and lyrics.

Pop Music Styles
-R&B, rock and roll, punk, heavy, metal, disco, soul, hiphop, jazz, mainstream, crossover,fusion, house music, world music and new age.
-It Might Be You song

1950-1990
– Rock ‘n’ Roll was popular, Elvis Presley reigned as “The King of Rock and Roll”
-Allan Freed, invented the term “Rock’n’Roll” from a song
- Rock and Roll influenced the British Group “ BEATLES”


JAZZ MUSIC
-          Originated in New Orleans, Louisiana in 19th century
-          Improvisation-element of jazz
-          Syncopated(displaced beats) pattern
-          Buddy Bolden used cornet(short trumpet)
-          Louis Armstrong used a trumpet
-          James Johnson was the first virtuoso(highly skilled in music)  jazz pianist




FOLK MUSIC
-          Traditional songs


COUNTRY MUSIC
-          Brought by European settlers
-          The music is to express their hardships
-          Johnny Cash in Folson Prison
-          Celina Gonzales and Reutilio Dominguez
VIOLIN-famous accompanying instrument
BANJO-brought by slaves
-popular in the mid 1800’s

GUITAR – early 1900’s, mass-produced and affordable
               -rhythm instrument before but later picking and plucking made it popular.

Other Stringed Instruments:
Dobro, dulcimer, steel guitar, mandolin, zither, bass guitar and the autoharp, accordion, harmonica, piano, washboards or drums
